Our Permaculture Goals

I've found stating our goals and writing them down an essential ingredient in the process of achieving them. The following goals are not listed in any order of priority.

  • Self reliance, in terms of energy and income needs, which means evolving a permaculture system with the following features:
  • emphasis on design and planning; focus on diversity and abundance
  • on-site water catchment for aquaculture, animals and birds (native and domestic), human use, fire control, and irrigation needs
  • composting, including utilising animals (worms, fowl and guinea pigs)
  • quarantine area for off-site resources
  • wilderness regeneration
  • organic vegetable garden using chicken "tractor" system including companion planting and crop rotation; mandala and no dig garden beds
  • Minimise need for off-site resources, including: materials, food, fuels and energy, entertainment, water, transport
  • waste management on site using composting, recycling and grey water systems, consumption reduction
  • integration of animals in orchard, companion planting, green manure, manuring of rest of property by wild life
  • timber production for fuel wood, polewood, "investment" trees
  • valuable (in $ economic terms) crop production, eg ginseng
  • plant nursery, for Trees for Life Free Tree Scheme and own use
  • adequate fire protection using design and placement of elements
  • passive solar and active solar (including wind) energy systems and building design.
  • A place to relax, be peaceful; a haven for both people, native birds and animals
  • Allow regeneration of local bush plant species, encouraging neighbours to do same to form a corridor of indigenous plants, conservation of existing flora and fauna
  • Provide opportunities for livelihood and place to live for offspring
  • Become involved in earth friendly organisations; eg LETS, PASA
  • Build social community with like minded people in area, possible future demonstration and education site (home education, permaculture and LETS workshops)
  • Evolve a system which tends to look after itself in time, ie utilise principles of natural succession, efficient and intensive design, with objectives of increasing biodiversity and yields meeting demands.
