Plants

Like typical permaculture gardens we aim to grow a wide variety of plants, not all for our table. We grow green crops for the guinea pigs and fruit and seed trees for the poultry. We harvest 'weeds' for the guinea pigs, compost heap and compost tea. Our plantings are never complete. Each year we put in more fruit or nut varieties, and this coming year we are aiming to plant banksias and proteas for small scale cut flower production. The past year plantings have concentrated on yakkas, the indigenous grass tree. We put in over 400 seedlings over the 4 ha property, hoping to recreate some of the 'feel' of this land before it became grazing country.

We grow vegetables close to the house and the orchard stretches between the house and the cabin, where lived temporarily while building. Annuals, such as lettuce, grow near the back door, and on the verandah we have built a shallow herb and bulb garden which doubles as a balustrade. The vegetable garden is fenced to protect it from our poultry and we have mixed vegetables with small fruiting bushes and herbs.

We have over 40 different fruiting trees, including soft, citrus and malus varieties, plus several different nuts, carobs, olives, persimmons, passionfruits and grapes. Decidous trees have been planted to the north of the house to allow winter solar access plus summer shade.
