Permaculture Diary: 3rd January 2008 Copyright © Beverley Paine First thing this morning we did the dishes from last night and then started washing, cutting and dipping apples and apricots for drying. We dip them in a soultion of dissolved crushed chewable vitamin C tablets. They are laid out in seedling punnet trays we salvaged from the local landscape yard nursery years ago. The tomatoes we are quartering and laying out without dipping. We bottled two jars of dried tomatoes with basil and cold-pressed olive oil, one of which we will give to our gourmet cook daughter as a present this Saturday. The pot plants and garden survived the strong winds yesterday. The winds are not as fierce today and are supposed to drop off in intensity by about midday. I'm not convinced. It is much stronger here on the Fleurieu Peninsula than on the Adelaide Plains. But then again, it is also cooler here: it's been hot all week in Adelaide. I watered the vegie garden, pot plants and small garden plants generously this morning, once again grateful that we installed those two 22,000litre rainwater tanks in early winter. We've calculated that we have enough rainwater to water the orchard and garden until April if it doesn't rain. Not only do my plants get watered when they need it, we don't have to worry about water restrictions. Robin managed to get another couple of trays of banana slices done for drying. The two trestles are covered in trays now: it looks like we will have to set up another one. The kiwi fruit leather ended up a bit sticky, probably because of the honey, so we dried it in the over for half an hour at approximately 50 degrees celcius. We then dusted it with icing sugar, but that didn't help much either. Anyway, it's cut and rolled and stored now. I spent the day editing and formatting Kathi's games booklets, as well as coming up with an idea to reformat Michele's book so that it doesn't cost so much to publish. I'm still battling with the notion of printing books and booklets but haven't found a suitable e-book solution yet that satisfies Robin. No exercise again today; no walk either. So much for commitment!
