Permaculture Techniques - Useful Animals in a Permaculture System
Chickens
Harvest: Eggs need to be harvested daily so convenient construction and location of chook house is essential. Excess roosters and older hens may be slaughtered for meat.
Treatment: Eggs will store easily, longer in a fridge. Surplus birds can be slaughtered and will require a suitable area for this. Skills are required to do this task.
Use: Eggs for human consumption. Meat for human, dog, cat etc consumption. Feathers for insulation, bedding, adding to compost. Manure for fertiliser. Insect control, weed control, ploughing, and companions for humans. Ducks Harvest: As for chickens. Treatment: As for chickens. Use: As for chickens, plus excellent for snail and slug control.
